Mysterious Sea ‘Worm’ Spotted Near New Zealand

Two divers filming off the coast of New Zealand spotted something that looked like an enormous plastic bag. Upon closer inspection, the divers discovered that it was an eight-meter long, translucent sea “worm.” It’s called a pyrosome, and it is a free-flowing colony of individual organisms called zooids. Zooids are small multicellular organisms that filter feed by pumping water through their bodies and catching plankton. The pyrosome can be as small as a centimeter or as big as the one in this video. At night, they swim up to the surface to feed, and when the sun comes up, they dive back into the depths.
